Critical Safety Classification
This product is intended to support foreign material exclusion. It is not supplied with a published load rating and must not be represented or used as a personnel fall-protection cover.
Do not stand, walk, sit or kneel on the protector. Do not place tools, equipment, materials or other loads on it.
If the open manway creates a fall, trip or access hazard, the employer must provide a separately approved cover, guardrail, barricade, travel-restraint system, personal fall-arrest system or other protection selected under the applicable site program and regulatory requirements.
Important Fit Information
The MW501F equipment designation alone does not guarantee fit on every unit. Equipment revisions, field modifications, flange repairs, installed hardware and site-specific configurations can affect compatibility.
Before ordering or installation, verify:
● The exact equipment and manway designation
● The oval opening’s length and width
● The outside flange dimensions
● The flange profile and bolt pattern
● Existing studs, bolts, hinges, obstructions or protrusions
● The required attachment or securing method
● Available installation and removal clearance
● Temperature, chemical and environmental exposure
● Whether a drawing or dimensional confirmation is required
Contact Energy Safety Supply before ordering if the manway has been modified or if any dimensions are uncertain.
How to Use the Custom HDPE MW501F Manway Protector
These instructions provide general FME guidance. The facility’s approved FME procedure, work package, energy-control program and responsible operations, maintenance, safety or quality personnel control the application.
- Verify the Product and Opening
Confirm the protector’s part number and verify that the opening is the intended MW501F oval manway. Compare the protector with the approved drawing, dimensions or site records before installation.
Do not install it on a different manway merely because the shape appears similar.
- Establish a Safe System Condition
Confirm that the equipment is in the condition required by the approved work package. Follow all applicable shutdown, lockout/tagout, depressurization, ventilation and stored-energy controls.
Do not use this protector to contain pressure, vacuum, fluid, steam, gas or hazardous energy.
- Inspect Before Installation
Inspect the entire protector, including its edges, surfaces and any attachment points. Do not use it if it is cracked, cut, melted, deeply gouged, chemically attacked, excessively warped, contaminated or otherwise damaged.
Confirm that all required securing components are present, suitable and approved for the application.
- Inspect and Prepare the Manway
Confirm that the flange and surrounding area are stable and free from debris that could prevent proper seating.
Identify sharp edges, protruding studs, hot surfaces, chemicals and other conditions that could damage the HDPE or create an installation hazard.
- Confirm the Oval Orientation
Identify the correct lengthwise and widthwise orientation before placing the protector. Align the oval profile with the intended MW501F manway and confirm that it provides the overlap and coverage required by the approved FME plan.
Do not rotate or force the protector into a position that causes incomplete coverage, interference or instability.
- Position the Protector
Place the protector over the intended manway in the approved orientation. Center it as required and keep hands clear of pinch points while positioning it.
Confirm that the protector sits as intended without rocking, excessive gaps or interference from installed hardware.
- Secure It Against Displacement
Secure the protector using the approved attachment method and compatible hardware specified for the application.
The protector must not be left unsecured where personnel, wind, vibration, equipment movement or other forces could displace it. Do not rely solely on its weight or friction unless that method has been specifically evaluated and approved.
Do not over-tighten hardware in a way that cracks, deforms or permanently warps the HDPE.
- Identify and Track It
Identify the protector and covered opening according to the facility’s FME program. Record its installation location, time, responsible person and any required unique identification.
Post required signs, tags or warnings so personnel understand that the manway remains open beneath an FME protector.
- Provide Separate Personnel Protection
Evaluate the exposed opening under the employer’s fall-protection, walking-working-surface and access-control programs.
Use the required guardrails, barricades, compliant load-rated covers, restraint systems or other controls. Do not allow anyone to step or place loads on this FME protector.
The protector does not replace a confined-space permit, attendant, entry control, isolation or rescue requirement.
- Monitor During Use
Inspect the protector periodically at the frequency required by the work package. Confirm that it remains correctly positioned, secured, identified and undamaged.
Reinspect it after nearby work, equipment movement, vibration, weather exposure or any event that could affect its position or condition.
- Remove and Account for It
Before removal, confirm that the work package authorizes the opening to be uncovered. Control tools, hardware and loose materials so they cannot enter the manway.
Remove the securing components and protector in a controlled manner. Immediately reconcile the protector and all installation hardware with the FME log.
Inspect the protector after removal. Clean and store an acceptable protector flat in a designated area away from excessive heat, ignition sources, chemicals and physical damage.

From the ESS Team
This MW501F oval manway protector is designed to support FME control—not personnel fall protection or system isolation.
Before ordering, confirm the exact manway configuration, including the oval opening’s length and width, flange dimensions, bolt pattern and installed obstructions. Before installation, verify the system condition, inspect the protector and establish how it will be secured against displacement.
Correct orientation matters with an oval protector. Confirm the lengthwise and widthwise alignment before securing it, and verify that it provides the coverage required by the site’s approved FME plan.
Once installed, identify the covered opening clearly and maintain any separately required barricades, guardrails or fall-protection controls. Never allow anyone to stand on the protector or place tools and equipment on it.
